TO ALL 3L and 4L LAW STUDENTS:

EXTENDED DEADLINE: August 6, 2021

Dear Santa Clara Law Students:

I have been asked by the Ingram American Inn of Court to select student leaders at Santa Clara Law who will be invited to serve as Pupils in next year’s Inn of Court membership.  I am writing to solicit student interest by 3L and 4L in serving as a Pupil in the Ingram Inn of Court during the 2021-2022 academic year.

In case you are not familiar with the Inn of Court concept, I will explain. The concept started in the US in the late 1970s and it is based on the English inns of court.  Senior lawyers and judges meet monthly with younger lawyers and law students to discuss issues of significance to the legal profession (for example, civility in the practice of law, the nature of professionalism among lawyers, development of lawyering skills), mentor newer lawyers and law students, and discuss the work they do. It is a very prestigious appointment and I can assure you that you will enjoy the experience, both for its emphasis on professional values and for the excellent lawyers and judges you’ll work with in the Inn. Here is a link to more information on the American Inns of Court:  https://home.innsofcourt.org/AIC/

The San Jose/Santa Clara has one Inn, named after well regarded federal judge, William Ingram.  The Ingram Inn leadership believes that it will return to in-person meetings in the fall and will meet on the second Wednesday of each month during the academic year (except for December) and the final meeting in May. Also in the past, the Inn’s monthly meetings were held at Adobe Lodge on campus or in the federal courthouse and the Inn leadership expects to begin meeting there again in the fall.  However, the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the customary meeting arrangements of the Inn and it may be that some fall programs will be held remotely.  The Inn did have a highly successful “Zoom” meeting in the spring, so the leadership is confident that it can continue to deliver high quality, professional programming for lawyers, judges and students. If you are selected for membership in the Inn as a Pupil, the Inn will give you specific information about meeting locations and times.  There is a small fee for pupils to participate but the law school covers the fee.

Please let me know if you are interested in being considered for appointment as a Pupil in the Ingram Inn of Court by sending an expression of interest, along with a current resume or personal statement to Noelia McKeever at nmckeever@scu.edu in the Dean’s Office.

Please send this information to Noelia by August 6, 2021, and we will notify you before classes begin to let you know if you have been selected for one of the positions.

Please let me or former Dean and Professor Donald Polden (who is a member of the Ingram Inn of Court and has worked closely with the Santa Clara Pupils) if you have any questions. You can reach him at dpolden@scu.edu

With warm regards,
Michael
