Santa Clara Law launches new Flex J.D Program

SANTA CLARA, Calif, Sept. 22, 2022 — In response to growing demand for flexible law programs, Santa Clara University School of Law is offering its part-time Juris Doctor degree in a hybrid online format for the first time starting in fall 2023.

Aimed at the working professional or family-focused student, the Flex J.D. provides the same world-class instruction and networking opportunities offered by the top-ranked Silicon Valley-based law school, with greater flexibility to complete learning remotely, with in-person education provided on a condensed timetable.

Flex J.D. students will not only be able to take advantage of the school’s Silicon Valley connections, alumni network, and nationally ranked Intellectual Property program, but also benefit from a schedule designed to make their on-campus learning component as convenient as possible.

“This innovative Flex JD program will make it possible for busy people from all walks of life and all areas of the country to achieve an exceptional Santa Clara University legal education and build their professional careers with the support of our Silicon Valley connections and our national network of prominent alumni who are leaders in practice and industry,” says Dean Michael Kaufman. “There is no better time to become a lawyer, and our hybrid, Flex J.D. is making a legal education accessible to anyone who dreams of pursuing a rewarding career in the law, but might not have the opportunity to pursue a more traditional path.”

The Flex J.D. program will be taught 67% on-site at Santa Clara Law, and 33% online. The schedule will be concentrated to minimize days on campus, with students in residence on campus the first week of each semester, as well as three weekends once per month for the remainder of the semester.

The online courses will be taught asynchronously to allow students to determine when and where to study between residential sessions.

Building upon the university’s Jesuit value of cura personalis, or care for the whole person, the new online and hybrid modalities will give students the ability to tailor their experience to their personal needs—whether it be balancing a full-time job, reducing commute times, or tending to family commitments.

“We are beyond excited to add the Flex JD program to the growing number of online and hybrid graduate programs at Santa Clara University,” said Toby McChesney, vice provost for graduate programs. “As the demand for online education grows, SCU Online is thrilled to take the university to new levels, providing accessibility to many more students while upholding the university’s long-standing values.”

Scholarships and financial assistance are available.
