Roy MaharajRoy Maharaj J.D. ‘98 sat down with IAM Magazine’s Adam Houldsworth to share a behind-the-scenes look into Ericsson’s changing patent portfolio. Maharaj, Vice President of Global Patent Licensing for leading networking and telecommunications company Ericsson, elaborated on the shifting landscape of Ericsson’s increasingly diversified Standard Essential Patent (SEP) revenue streams: “There are different ways we might seek to monetize our portfolio in these areas. We are thinking about the development of potential new licensing programmes.” The article also revealed that Ericsson will be looking into new patent holdings in fields including cloud computing, network security, and multi-media processing, among others.

Maharaj further lent some advice for succeeding at patent licensing, stressing the importance of relationships: “[Licensing patents] is a relationship sale. […] You also must think in a commercial way and establish good business relationships. I always encourage people in my licensing team to go out and establish these relationships. Then it becomes a team sell.”
