We’ve been busy this fall at the High Tech Law Institute (HTLI) at Santa Clara Law! We welcomed our first Tech Edge JD class. We re-launched the High Tech Tuesdays speaker series with a discussion and book signing by our own Professor Kerry Macintosh for her new book, “Enhanced Beings: Human Germline Modification and the Law.” In the coming weeks we will host Angela Dunning, a partner at Cooley LLP and lead counsel in Naruto v. Slater et al, the famous (or infamous) “monkey selfie” copyright case; and Barbara Rae-Venter, a genetic genealogy consultant who used genomics to help solve the Golden State Killer cold case.

New Breakfast Bytes Speaker Series

We launched a new speaker series, Breakfast Bytes, and our first guest speaker in November will be Director Andrei Iancu of the USPTO.

Artificial Intelligence for Social Impact Speaker Series

  Dr. DJ Patil lecture

Dr. DJ Patil lecture

We kicked off the second year of Artificial Intelligence for Social Impact, a speaker series curated by Professor Colleen Chien with a standing-room-only lecture by Dr. DJ Patil, who served as the Chief Data Scientist of the US Office of Science and Technology Policy under President Obama. Dr. Patil addressed the juncture between ethical ideas and practice in the field of data science.

Technology and Justice

Professors Colleen Chien and Laura Norris have organized our inaugural Second Chances Hackathon, “Hacking Empathy and Second Chances,” bringing together students and experts in tech and law to develop technology-driven strategies to help bring clearance relief, such as criminal record expungement, to those who are eligible for it.

Spring semester promises to be just as exciting with the annual Internet Law WIP workshop, more speakers, our fourth annual In-House Counsel Institute, and the return of the Federal Circuit Bar Association’s symposium. Stay tuned!
