The FLASH Program at the San Jose District Court is currently seeking an intern for summer. Ideal candidate would have experience and course work in IP, specifically copyright, law. The FLASH program has seen a huge influx in copyright, specifically cable piracy cases, and needs an intern familiar with that area of the law. Position is part time and there may be a small stipend available.

The exact job tasks will vary based on the intern’s experience but may include any of the following.

1. Research, contact & develop a network of lawyers to refer pro bono cases for partial and full representation, by legal specialty (e.g., civil rights, employment, SSA, IP).

2. Research and draft pleadings, motions, CMC statements.

3. Legal research on hot topics facing FLASH clients, devise pleadings and motions, develop outside attorney contacts/experts.

4. Organize resources for clients, including form templates, instructions, models forms, etc.

5. Assist with client intake, administrative tracking and record-keeping.

6. Contact and connect with other FLASH-like programs and directors for suggestions, to develop shared resources, etc.

7. Develop client resources in plain English, such as “Does My Case Belong in Federal Court?” “How to Frame a Complaint or Answer, Discovery – What the Hell?,” etc.

8. Computerize attorney contacts, resource lists of agencies and persons, local public resources and referral sources so that instantaneous referral can be made.

9. With the Director, attend hearings, trials, etc. to familiarize the intern with Federal Court protocol and process. Meet the clerk staff and judges.

10. Develop training materials for volunteer attorneys.

11. Review, revise and update volunteer forms, information, etc.
