On Thursday, October 31st, 2013, Clinic Director, Francisco Rivera Juaristi, and other civil society organizations met with a high-level government delegation from the Dominican Republic in D.C. to discuss a recent ruling from its Constitutional Court that retroactively and arbitrarily denationalizes hundreds of thousands of dominicans of haitian descent. The ruling may affect the rights of the Clinic’s clients in a case filed before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in 2012. Prof. Rivera highlighted the concerns shared by the United Nations and several international human rights organizations, all of which criticize the ruling as being contrary to the Dominican Republic’s obligations under the American Convention on Human Rights and ignores a binding decision issued by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in the matter.
