The weekly Scout Report comes from the University of Wisconsin, so it’s not surprising that this week’s issue calls attention to the online Proxmire Collection. William Proxmire represented the state of Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate for more than 30 years, before his death in 2005. In addition to biographical information, press releases, interviews, and information about Senator Proxmire’s work for human rights and against government corruption, the website links to a list of Golden Fleece Award recipients for 1975 – 1987. Proxmire initiated the annual award for government agencies which misused taxpayer funds. The first award in 1975 went to the National Science Foundation “For squandering $84,000 to try to find out why people fall in love.” Happy Valentine’s Day!
