The Katharine and George Alexander Community Law Center (KGACLC) in partnership with KLOK-AM, reaches thousands of Spanish-speaking Bay Area residents with general legal information. Twice a month during the early morning commute, Celina Rodriguez, Host and Executive Producer of the NOTICIAS Y MAS CON CELINA RODRIGUEZ (News and More) show, elicits basic information from a Law Center representative in the areas of Consumer Rights, Workers’ Rights and Immigration. Ms. Rodriguez, also the owner and CEO of Rodriguez Media Productions, is a well-known media personality with a long history and an established reputation as an organizer and supporter of the Latino Community. Thanks to her generous donation of prime air time during her show, thousands of people learn about their basic rights throughout all the Bay Area counties and those in the Central Valley. KLOK is the largest Spanish-speaking radio station in Northern California, reaching between 1.5 and 1.7 million listeners daily.

Although Ms. Rodriguez and the KGACLC have collaborated to produce other news segments in the past, the current informational segments have taken place consistently since January of this year. Through this combined effort, Ms. Rodriguez and the KGACLC are able to increase awareness in the Spanish-speaking community regarding such subjects as harassment in the workplace, wrongful termination, unpaid wages, illegal debt collection practices and general immigration rights, among others. The Law Center’s attorneys and SCU Adjunct Faculty Member Ruth Silver Taube have been instrumental in generating the scripts for the shows.

The NOTICIAS Y MAS CON CELINA RODRIGUEZ show has a large and loyal audience that trusts Ms. Rodriguez’s balanced coverage of current issues and news. And although her privileged position allows her to charge a premium for every single minute of air time, she donates various segments of her show to non-profit organizations that work on behalf of the Spanish-speaking community. "I really enjoy working on this project with the Law Center because we are able to offer professional legal assistance to our audience," says Ms. Rodriguez. "Many of our listeners don’t have the economic resources to get the assistance that they need. Some time ago, a listener who heard the show realized that he had been fired illegally. He called me looking for assistance, and so I referred him to the Law Center. Some months later he called me back again just to let me know that he had obtained his job back, thanks to the Law Center. That’s when I know that my investment is indeed paying off," she concludes.
