Center for Social Justice & Public Service board member Aileen F. Casanave  received a Congressional Award from Representative Ro Khanna. The award is in recognition of her efforts in the advancement of the African American community and her commitment to helping minority law students and youth.

For the past 8 years, Ms. Casanave has been instrumental in creating a mentorship program for Santa Clara Law called The Judge’s Fireside Chat, where African American law students meet at Judge Risë Jones Pichon JD ’76‘s house with the Santa Clara Law dean, law  school alumni, faculty, practicing attorneys. The goal of the gathering, in addition to providing a home cooked soul food meal, is to create a “village” environment whereby the law student of color is given a mentor and receives the resources necessary to excel in school, receive their law degree and pass the California Attorney’s Bar.
