Heafey Institute for Trial Advocacy
The 20th Annual Judge William Ingram Symposium will address the emergent Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that promises to provide methods of supporting the work of lawyers and the legal profession. However, this exciting technology also presents potential and significant challenges and dangers to the profession, the administration of justice and to attorney-client relationships.
The Symposium will feature a discussion by experts in law and technology on the great opportunities and potential effects of AI technology on the work of lawyers and judges. This technology has already had a noticeable impact on many areas of law practice, including the use of AI chatbot “virtual assistants”, powering faster legal research and contract analysis and review, and generating law firm automated marketing management systems and developing the capacity for speech recognition and transcription. But concerns about the scope, reach and possible misuse of AI are the subjects of concern by many law organizations, judges and leaders at the bar.
The Symposium will include presentations of these topics by a panel of law and AI technology experts who will identify the current uses and potential misuses of AI in the work of lawyers, courts and the profession. The discussion topics will include the growth and potential of AI technology, how the legal profession has utilized the technology, and concerns about how the technology can adversely affect the legal profession, courts and the practice of law. The program will include an opportunity for questions from attendees.
