The 19th Annual Judge William Ingram Symposium on the legal profession and the practice of law will be held at the Santa Clara University School of Law on January 11, 2023.
The 2023 symposium will address topics concerning the future of the legal profession and the practice of law in light of the public health and societal crises and the institutional challenges of the past decade. The COVID pandemic exposed weaknesses in how firms and legal institutions, including government entities and judicial offices and chambers, managed their workers’ health and well-being. Further, the recent social justice movements (#MeToo, BLM, xenophobic-based attacks on Asian-Americans, for example) have placed greater demands on lawyers, judges, and their institutions to address systemic racism, discrimination and implicit bias in the profession and in society. But, as the saying goes, the past is prologue. What have these recent crises and social upheavals taught us about the future of the profession? The future will present new challenges attributable to uncertain economic conditions, changing attitudes of law business workers toward their work and a greater emphasis on worker wellness and safety. And new unanticipated crises may arise to challenge lawyers and the profession. The recent crises have enriched our understanding of the importance of the rule of law and the work of lawyers and judges and built resiliency in law institutions. Will we be able to learn from those challenges and crises to prepare us for the challenges ahead?
To address these difficult, but interesting and pertinent, questions, three outstanding lawyers, including a former federal judge will discuss the lasting impacts of the recent crises and challenges and help us look forward to the future of the legal profession. Consistent with past symposia, attendees will have an opportunity to engage in the discussion.
