Introduction to Intellectual Property Protection Systems in Asia

Catalog No.: 323

Course Description:

This course provides an overview of intellectual property protection laws in Asian countries, with main focus on China, Japan, Korea, India, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

This course is intended to be a survey course, giving students overviews of intellectual property laws in these Asian jurisdictions, including laws relating to patents, utility models, copyright, industrial designs, trademarks, genetic resources, trade secret, traditional knowledge, geographical indications and domain names. Comparison with the US system will be used, and international institutions which provide guidelines and facilitate the IP procurement process in the region will also be introduced.

Intellectual property protection plays an important role in the achievement of national and regional socio-economic developments; the interactions between IP protection, foreign investments, and the growth of a local innovation economy will be explored. Intellectual property law, policy, and institutions will be examined in the broader context of cross-border economic and cultural changes taking place in Asia today.
