To earn the Sports Law Certificate, a student must satisfy the requirements specified below.

Requirements

1. Coursework

A candidate must complete, with a C minus or better (or P where permitted): (1) Sports Law, (2) Intellectual Property Survey, and (3) at least 3 elective courses from the following list (Note: this is not an exhaustive list and additional courses can be added):

Business Immigration Law
Community Property
Copyright Law
Corporate Finance
Employment Law
Entertainment Transactions
Estate Planning
Family Law
Family Wealth Management
Federal Income Tax
Immigration Law
Labor Law
Law of Non-Profit Organizations
Legal Issues of Start-Up Businesses
Negotiating
Privacy & Technology
Privacy Law
Rights of Publicity
State and Local Tax
Technology Licensing
Trademarks & Unfair Competition

2. Paper

Candidates must submit one (1) paper into the Sports Lawyers Association Writing Competition OR publish a paper on a sports law-related topic in a publication likely to be read by sports law professionals. Topics and publication venues require Certificate Director pre-approval.

3. Multiple Certificates

A student may earn the Sports Law Certificate and another certificate if he or she meets the requirements of both certificates. However, the requirements for other certificates may include restrictions on students’ ability to count the same units or paper toward more than one certificate. Students cannot earn both the Sports Law Certificate and the Privacy Law Certificate.

4. Certificate Declaration

Students planning to pursue the Sports Law Certificate should complete the Declaration Form  prior to their 2L class registration. Late declaration requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All certificate requirements must be completed prior to the candidate’s graduation date.
