Course Description:
This seminar will provide an introduction to the theory and practices of restorative justice, a centuries-old approach to dispute resolution that emphasizes repairing harms by bringing together victims, offenders, their respective communities, and other stakeholders in a common quest for truth, healing and reconciliation. In recent years, restorative justice has emerged as a prominent alternative intersecting with the legal systems domestically and internationally. Restorative justice programs exist in prisons, courts, schools, and many other settings. Students will learn the theory and practical skills of restorative justice in both real-world contexts and through in-class exercises. Active preparation for and engagement in the weekly sessions are essential. A course project and final paper are required.
