Course Description:
The primary focus of the Shanghai program is doing business in the People’s Republic of China, and the legal system that would govern such transactions. Classes are held at Jiao Tong University, one of China’s leading institutions. The course covers essential laws and regulations that govern trade and investment with China, one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The faculty of Jiao Tong University Law School, as well as practicing lawyers from some of China’s largest international law firms, will share their expertise. The course covers subjects such as China’s legal system, investment, environmental, tax, intellectual property, and labor and employment laws. Classes typically will be held in the morning. Planned field trips such as visits to law firms, the arbitration commission, the stock exchange and multinational companies will be scheduled for some afternoons. There is a welcome dinner as well as other social events. All instruction is in English. The final exam consists of a 3-hour in class exam at the end of the course. The students will have the opportunity on weekends to participate in optional field trips to nearby water towns, famous gardens in Suzhou or the West Lake in Hangzhou.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in possible trips, including:
To local law firms
To multinational businesses, such as Intel or eBay
To an arbitration commission, a court, or the stock exchange
