Santa Clara Law announced two new faculty members for 2009-10: Kyle Graham and W. David Ball. "The high quality of the faculty at Santa Clara Law has always been a hallmark of our institution. Our newly appointed faculty members will continue that legacy,” says Dean Donald J. Polden.

Kyle Graham, assistant professor (J.D., Yale Law School, 2001; B.A., Stanford University, 1996), served for three years as a deputy district attorney in Mono County, California. He has also worked as a staff attorney for Associate Justice Carlos Moreno of the California Supreme Court, as an associate with the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, and as a law clerk for United States District Judge William Alsup. His principal fields of study are torts and criminal procedure. Recent publications include "Tactical Ineffective Assistance in Capital Trials,” published in the American University Law Review; "Why Torts Die,” published in the Florida State University Law Review; "The Continuing Violations Doctrine,” published in the Gonzaga Law Review; "The Refugee Jurist and American Law Schools, 1933-1941,” published in the American Journal of Comparative Law; and "A Moment in The Times: Law Professors and the Court-Packing Plan,” published in the Journal of Legal Education.

W. David Ball, assistant professor (J.D., Stanford University, 2006, with academic distinction, B.A., University of North Carolina, Morehead Scholar, with highest distinction), was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University from 1992-1994, where he earned a B.A./M.A. in philosophy, politics, and economics. As a fellow at the Stanford Criminal Justice Center, he examined ways in which integrated criminal justice information systems can be used to promote "best practices” and outcome tracking in the California criminal justice system. He also served as a Social Justice Teaching Fellow at Santa Clara Law in 2007-08. Ball clerked for the Honorable John T. Noonan, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco. His fields of interest and expertise are in the areas of criminal law, criminal procedure, prisons and re-entry, and Islamic law.
