Judicial Externship I: Part Time

Course Description:

The purpose of this externship is to afford qualified students the opportunity to observe and participate in the functioning of either a trial or appellate court, observe and critically evaluate work attorneys present to the court, observe and critically evaluate the nature and quality of judicial decision making, and refine research and writing skills. A student may participate in a part-time (up to 6 units) judicial externship.

Interested students may obtain information about judges and courts that use externs and about the application process from ExPro well in advance of your ideal start. Graded Credit/No Credit. Part-time Judicial Externship: Students may earn from 3-6 units of credit for a part-time judicial externship by (1) undertaking an externship with a judge or court, and (2) participating in, and successfully completing the Externship Workshop (706).

SUMMER 2021 SPECIAL NOTE:  As you know, the situation for the summer is in flux: both new information and circumstances change rapidly. Thus, ExPro may revisit this policy but until then the following applies for summer 2021 externship registration.  ExPro will only approve those registrations which demonstrate that externship hours can be accomplished remotely. In submitting your ExPro registration, you must confirm that you have discussed this requirement with your supervisor and received approval to work remotely, if necessary. The summer registration form has been amended to include this language. If you cannot receive such approval, please be advised that ExPro will accept registration applications up to and including June 4, 2021. Hopefully, this provides ample time for all externship sponsors to fully understand their needs and their ability to accommodate remote work. And finally, please be advised that, if you or your externship sponsor are unable to meet your hours requirement for any reason and due to mandatory remote work / telecommuting issues, ExPro will not provide any make-up assignments or hours and you will forfeit the units associated with those unmet hours.  If you need any assistance in working with your supervisor or externship sponsor in setting up remote work, please let us know.

Credit/No Credit. Prerequisite: Civil Procedure (114). Students must apply. Applications are available online on the Externship website. Students must secure their externship prior to application submission. Students must also register for the Externship Workshop (Law 706). Permission numbers to register will be provided by the ExPro upon application approval.
