Clinical Professor of Law Evangeline Abriel has been honored  as a 2018-2019 Pro Bono Champion by the Santa Clara Valley chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.  AILA describes the award as an “annual chapter-based program designed to continue the tradition of honoring those who are exemplars of the pillar of professionalism that is pro bono work. …This program is designed to shine a well-deserved light on those among us who are consistently achieving and exceeding their pro bono goals, and who are tirelessly working to promote pro bono service and to further AILA’s mission ‘…to promote justice, advocate for fair and reasonable immigration law and policy, advance the quality of immigration and nationality law and practice, and enhance the professional development of its members.'”  Prof. Abriel will also be honored, with other chapter honorees, at AILA’s national conference in June in Orlando, Florida.   The basis for the award is descried as “your  week of volunteer service in December 2018, in Tijuana MX , during which time you offered valuable immigration consultations and assistance to numerous migrant asylum seekers arriving at our southern border.  Your collaboration with Al Otro Lado, a bi-national non profit legal services organization, enabled many asylum seekers to get trusted, valuable, pro bono immigration advice, at a time when these vulnerable families had nowhere else to turn.  You gave tirelessly of your time and talents, right at the start of the larger exodus from the Northern triangle Central American region.  Your quick response was life transforming to so many who needed assistance at that critical moment.”
