In May of 2022, Santa Clara Law School joined a list of 99 Deans from law schools all around the country in support of increased funding for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). With help from State Attorney Generals, Judges, and other law representatives, the initiative was successful in creating awareness of the need for increased funding.

The final FY23 appropriations bill, signed into law by President Biden last week,  includes $560 million for LSC. While the final figure is below the White House request of $700 million and substantially below LSC’s own request of $1.2 billion, it represents a 14.5% increase over last year’s appropriation.  Legal Services Corporation leaders believe the letter from the deans was impactful in the legislative deliberations and they are grateful for the support.
