Michael Manoukian, J.D. '14 grew up in the Bay Area, California to two parents in the legal field, so his interest in the law began at an early age: “I was fascinated by listening to them discuss the real-world problems they were helping people navigate and resolve.” He saw a career in law as a path that would allow him to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. When it was time to apply to law schools, Manoukian thought Santa Clara Law was a natural fit. What stood out to him was the “exceptional faculty, strong and diverse alumni network, and location in the heart of Silicon Valley.”

Equally as appealing was the school’s Jesuit tradition, which validated his belief that faith, education, and career can coexist to give deeper meaning to one’s work beyond personal success and financial gain. “The Jesuit values reinforced in me at Santa Clara Law continue to shape how I try to approach both my work and my life. They taught me the importance of treating people with humility and compassion and recognizing the dignity of every person. They also taught me that when you see someone struggling or encounter an injustice, it is not enough to simply acknowledge it—you should do what you can to help,” explains Manoukian. Over the course of his career, he has kept that principle in mind, making sure to embrace the opportunities and blessings he’s been given with gratitude.

Manoukian continues to lead both in faith and in law, serving as President of the Santa Clara County St. Thomas More Society and as Partner at Lathrop GPM LLP, where he specializes in labor and employment law. He became interested in the field after participating in the Katharine & George Alexander Community Law Center’s (KGACLC) Workers’ Rights Clinic. “Professor Ruth Silver-Taube [Supervising Attorney at KGACLC] really opened my eyes to the impact I could have on people’s lives through this area of law. What I enjoy most about the practice is that the stakes are human, while the consequences are also very real for the businesses involved,” says Manoukian.

Working in employment law, especially out of the Silicon Valley, brings the opportunity to help employers stay ahead in an ever-evolving legal landscape. But it’s not without its challenges. “Economic pressures, changing workplace expectations, and uncertainty in the broader world can all affect how businesses manage their people and make decisions. Helping clients navigate that complexity—and finding practical, thoughtful ways to move their businesses forward—is what makes the practice so rewarding,” says Manoukian.

Upon reflecting on his journey from law student to firm partner, Manoukian credits the Santa Clara Law faculty and alumni who opened doors for him, gave him opportunities, and provided invaluable mentorship along the way.
