Dean Magliozzi works at the intersection of legal education, lawyer development, and innovation, guided by a central question: What do lawyers need to know and be able to do to thrive in a changing profession, and how do we design legal education to help them get there?
As a member of Santa Clara Law’s senior leadership team, Sandee works across traditional academic boundaries to identify emerging needs and translate ideas into programs, curricula, and learning experiences. Her current work focuses on the distinctly human capacities lawyers will need in an increasingly AI-enabled profession, including judgment, relational intelligence, listening, negotiation, collaboration, adaptability, and creative problem-solving.
At Santa Clara, Sandee has held leadership roles across curriculum, assessment, experiential learning, and clinical faculty hiring, retention, and promotion. She previously chaired the Assessment Committee, leading the development and implementation of the Law School’s institutional assessment plan. Her service has also included the ABA self-study, academic affairs and curriculum committees, the University Assessment Committee, and the Faculty Advisory Board for the Ciocca Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Sandee is the co-creator of Santa Clara Law’s Flex JD Program, Silicon Valley’s hybrid part-time law degree. She also co-developed the former MLS in Corporate Compliance, contributed to the inaugural curriculum for the In-House Counsel Institute, and partnered with other law schools and the Alameda County Bar Association to launch the Bay Area Legal Incubator (BALI), which supports solo attorneys committed to affordable legal services and access to justice.
A longtime advocate for competency-based and experiential legal education, Sandee was the primary drafter of Santa Clara Law’s Competency Model and designed, developed, and implemented Critical Lawyering Skills, a first-of-its-kind required course for first-year students. She currently teaches Negotiating, where students develop their capacity to manage conflict, understand interests, build relationships, exercise judgment, and solve problems collaboratively.
Her writing and professional work have consistently focused on “next practices”: moving beyond established models to anticipate the skills, experiences, and structures lawyers will need for what comes next. Her publications include Can Competencies Drive Change in the Legal Profession?, How Moving from “Best” to “Next” Practices Can Fuel Innovation, and chapters on competency development, talent management, and collaboration between law schools and law firms.
That work now extends to relational lawyering and the challenge of preserving and strengthening the deeply human dimensions of practice as artificial intelligence assumes a greater role in legal analysis and production.
Before joining Santa Clara Law, Sandee was a national Senior Manager of Attorney Training and Development at AmLaw 100 firms, where she designed professional-development systems for practicing lawyers. She brought that experience into legal education to help bridge the divide between how lawyers are educated and how they develop expertise in practice. She served on the Board of Directors of NALP, the National Association for Legal Career Professionals, and is a frequent author and speaker on lawyer development, legal education, and professional competencies.
Sandee began her legal career as a Drinan Fellow in the Economic Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and is admitted to practice in California.
