Support for Global and International Students
Welcome to Santa Clara Law's Global Student Community
Our team is here to support you in your personal and professional growth. To supplement the resources and events open to all law students, Center for Global Law and Policy hosts a variety of special activities exclusively for our global and international students, including:
Pre-Law Playlist
Our optional summer discussion group that uses movies, podcasts, and news to explain the U.S. legal system and build your legal vocabulary and confidence before school begins.
Global Orientation
Global Orientation includes personal guidance on the U.S. educational system, as well as activities to help you prepare for the start of classes.
Past years have included activities like - a panel of Global students sharing about their experience, icebreakers, personalized advising, and sessions around making the most of your Law School experience.
For students on F- and J-visas, there is also typically a separate welcome with International Students & Scholars.
The Silicon Valley Experience
We co-host the Silicon Valley experience with Santa Clara University's Ciocca Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Why? You are studying in Silicon Valley. Just like if you were studying in Los Angeles, we'd believe that every lawyer should know something about the entertainment industry, we believe that an entrepreneurial mindset is essential for all students studying in the Silicon Valley.
The Silicon Valley’s famous companies like Google, Meta, etc. were built using the entrepreneurial mindset.
At Santa Clara, the entrepreneurial mindset is defined through Ciocca Center's values, including skills like empathy, viewing problems as opportunities, and more.
Past Silicon Valley experiences have included: site visits to Google, site visits to IntBot (a robotics company building interactive hospitality humanoid robots), Plug and Play's Technology Summit, and TechCrunch's San Francisco Disrupt Conference.
Students are additionally advised on additional opportunities on and off campus to further engage in Silicon Valley business and technology culture.
Legal Site Visits
Behind the scenes visits to local courts, legal non-profits, multinational law firms, and in-house legal teams.
In past terms, students have visited sites like: San Francisco's 9th District Court of Appeals, the San Jose Hall of Justice's Law and Motion Court Departments, and the Consulate General of Australia.
Global Career Launch
This is a full training that covers all the standard US practices for finding work - LinkedIn, resumes, networking, and interviewing, but also prepares Global students to grapple with questions around discernment and purpose in the Jesuit way. We also guide students through complicated cultural questions like “Should I use an English name?”
U.S. Immigration Policy Workshops
We host specialized workshops on U.S. immigration policies for impacted students including guidance on options after graduation.
Social and Cultural Activities
These activities help build community among our Global students and connect with both U.S. culture and global culture around the world.
We have hosted activities like trips to Monster Jam, SF Opera, SF de Young (Japan “Art of Manga”), SF de Young (Egypt “Treasures of the Pharaohs”), Giants baseball games, and U.S. Thanksgiving Dinner.
Global Graduation Celebration
Co-hosted with the Global Engagement Office, we provide a special send-off celebration for our global students and their families.
