The Conflict Resolution Program provides a rich array of academic activities that translate theory to practice. CRP offerings include academic courses, student competitions, workshops, conferences, and faculty scholarship emphasizing high tech, international law and social justice.
About the Conflict Resolution Program
Santa Clara Law’s Conflict Resolution Program was established in 2017, through the generosity of John Bates, Jr., a prominent Bay Area mediator, Santa Clara Law class of ’74. He not only provided funding but continues to contribute his time, enthusiasm and considerable expertise to the program. Significant additional gifts have enabled the program to expand and allowed the Law School to expand its theory-to-practice academic offerings and activities for students, promoting connection and collaboration with Silicon Valley legal and business professionals. These activities include an array of experiences: from clinical and externship opportunities for students to workshops, conferences and faculty scholarship.
Conflict Resolution Program academic offerings include courses in negotiation, mediation, arbitration, international arbitration, online dispute resolution and interviewing and counseling. Our students’ energy and enthusiasm for learning about Conflict Resolution have resulted in other initiatives and programs. For example, the Bates Mediation Clinic launched in 2024, providing greater access to justice for small claims litigants in Santa Clara County Superior Court. Under the supervision of experienced mediators and retired judges, students mediate small claims matters, helping the litigants and gaining hands-on experience in mediation.
