This summer as a Peggy Browning Legal Fellow, at the Hotel & Gaming Trades Council (HTC), I strengthened my understanding of how legal analysis, problem-solving, and client-centered advocacy work together. My prior experience as a union organizer gave me an understanding of workers’ needs and collective action, while this fellowship allowed me to see how attorneys use legal research, strategy, negotiation, and litigation to advance those interests. I learned that effective advocacy is not simply about identifying the strongest legal argument. It also requires understanding the client’s goals, recognizing legal and contractual limitations, and continuing to explore practical solutions. Having the opportunity to work on matters ranging from individual member issues to contract negotiations and arbitrations gave me a much broader understanding of labor practice. Most importantly, the fellowship strengthened my interest in labor law and confirmed my goal of becoming a litigator who represents workers and unions and uses litigation as a tool to advance their rights.
