Student Requirements

The Externship Program is a class and runs concurrent to the academic semester.  All applicants must have completed Critical Lawyering Skills and have their sponsoring firm or organization approved by the Externship Program Director.

To participate in the Externship Program, students must:

  1. Work under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney or an individual otherwise qualified to supervise, with at least five (5) years’ practice/industry experience;
  2. Be engaged in substantive legal (not administrative) work;
  3. Receive meaningful, consistent, and regularly scheduled feedback on assignments; and
  4. Be consistently engaged in their externship concurrent to the entire 14-week (fall and spring) or 7-week (summer) semester.

Students cannot front-load or back-load extern hours. In other words, students must be reporting regularly to their externship placement for the entire semester. Only hours recorded during the academic semester count toward externship credits.

All externship students must register for LAW 706, the online Externship Workshop.
