ExPro Student Registration Steps
- Secure a position with a sponsoring organization and agree to the hours and days you will be present.
- Complete the Student Registration Form.
- To complete a second externship with the same sponsor/supervisor OR to complete an externship with your current employer, you must complete and submit a Petition, which:
- Identifies your existing role, including projects and tasks;
- Identifies the new legal tasks with which you will engage; and
- Also identifies the legal skill-set you will enhance, learn, and/or grow.
- Submit your Student Registration Form
- After submitting your registration form, your placement must be approved by the Externship Program Director. This vetting process generally requires confirmation from your supervising attorney regarding compliance with Externship Program requirements.
- If your proposed sponsor is new to the Externship Program, or has not recently hosted a Santa Clara Law extern, after submitting a registration form, you may also be asked to complete and submit a Sponsor Background Form. You will receive an email with a link to this online form, if it is required.
- Once your externship is approved, you will receive a Written Agreement Form via email. You and your supervisor must complete, sign, and date this form, then return it via email at expro@scu.edu.
- Upon receipt of your completed Written Agreement Form, you will be sent a Workday approval email which will allow you to register for:
- LAW 706, the required online Externship Workshop; and
- The credit-bearing course that corresponds to your externship type.
Registration Timeline:
Please note that Workday approval tokens are required to enroll in all Externship Courses.
Also note that this process may not correspond with your assigned registration date/time as determined by Student Services.
- Two months before the start of each semester: registration forms accepted.
- One month before the start of each semester: registration forms accepted on a rolling basis, subject to class availability.
- No applications accepted following the add/drop period for each semester (the first week of classes).
Calculating Units:
All externship students must register for both LAW 706, the online Externship Workshop class, and their relevant externship course. No units are awarded for Law 706. However, this class is mandatory and required to receive externship credit.
Through the credit-bearing externship course, students earn 1 unit per 50 hours of substantive legal work. All hours counting toward units must be completed during the academic semester. The minimum number of units is 3 (equivalent to 150 hours), except for part-time students and graduating 3Ls, who may register for a minimum of 2 units. The maximum is 6 units for the fall and spring semesters, and 5 units for the summer semester.
