Mission Statement
The mission of the High Tech Law Institute is to be a nationally recognized program that educates and trains lawyers who find innovative legal solutions to intellectual property and technology issues.
Affiliated Faculty
Our high tech law faculty care about teaching. They also are well-known for their expertise in many areas, working with public and private agencies and organizations on policy initiatives and regulation.
Affiliated Programs
Privacy Law Program – unique in its premier access to industry leaders in data technology
Entrepreneurs’ Law Clinic – a clinical program for upper-division law students
Tech Edge JD – an innovative legal education program combining law, business, technology, and individualized mentorship.
JD/MSIS and JD/MBA Joint Degree Programs – allows students to develop a deep technological understanding of the information technology industry’s legal issues and learn how to use technology effectively in a law practice.
LLM Programs – Santa Clara Law offers two LLM programs in Intellectual Property. The LLM in Intellectual Property is a program for students who currently hold a JD degree from a US law school. The United States Law with a specialization in Intellectual Property Law program is for students who received their legal education outside of the United States.
Affiliated Student Organizations
A number of student organizations focus on intellectual property and technology law. Students interested in activities related to these practice areas are encouraged to contact the organization representatives:
- Blockchain & Compliance Legal Society - The Blockchain and Compliance Legal Society (BCLS) facilitates the intersection of Blockchain (including but not limited to cryptocurrency) and legal compliance.
- Chiefs in IP (ChIPs) - Santa Clara Law was chosen to host the first law school student chapter of the national organization dedicated to advancing women at the confluence of law, technology, and regulatory policy.
- High Tech Law Journal
- High Tech Law Moot Courts - Santa Clara Law participates in several IP-related competitions, such as the Villanova Law Esports Negotiation Competition, the INTA Saul Lefkowitz (Trademark) Moot Court Competition, the AIPLA Giles Sutherland Rich Moot Court Competition and the USPTO Patent and Drafting Competition.
- Internet Law Student Organization (ILSO) - The Internet Law Student Organization is dedicated to raising awareness and sparking interest about Internet law and the theoretical and practical dilemmas that arise when applying laws to rapidly developing technologies. ILSO members engage in crucial discussions about hot topics in Internet law such as privacy, content moderation and online free speech, ethics, cybersecurity, and online intellectual property.
- Law & Business Society (LBS) - The Law and Business Society if for students who are interested in the intersection of law and business.
- Privacy Law Student Organization (PLSO) -The Privacy Law Student Organization is dedicated to the study of modern issues in Privacy Law.
- Society for Artificial Intelligence and Law (SAIL) -The Society for Artificial Intelligence and Law is dedicated to educating students and facilitate meaningful discussions about the legal implications, and the theoretical, practical, and ethical dilemmas arising from the advancement of Artificial Intelligence in a variety of fields and settings.
- Society for Interactive Entertainment and Gaming Law (SIEGL) -The mission of the Society for Interactive Entertainment and Gaming Law is to raise awareness for and spark interest in Interactive Entertainment and Gaming Law, and the theoretical, practical and ethical dilemmas arising from the expansion of the video-game industry in general.
- Sports and Entertainment Law Society (SELS) - The Sports and Entertainment Law Society provides students with access to practitioners and other individuals in the sports and entertainment law fields, and allows students to explore opportunities and interests in many areas of sports and entertainment law. The group's activities include an annual symposium and lunchtime speaker events.
- Student Intellectual Property Law Association (SIPLA) - Founded in 1989, SIPLA is a student-operated organization focusing on IP and technology law. The group sponsors programs throughout the year.
