Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office Misdemeanor Externship
A second opportunity that is available through the Externship Program is the Public Defender’s Office Misdemeanor Externship. Selected extern students will work on real cases with live clients under the supervision of a senior attorney. Other tasks include legal research, document preparation, and investigative assistance. Students may not participate in this externship while working in law enforcement or in the district attorney’s office due to the conflict of interest it presents.
Pre- or Co-Requisite: Evidence (LAW 320). Students should qualify to be certified pursuant to the CA State Bar’s certification requirements. Students must also register for and concurrently complete LAW 706 in order to receive credit.
Students register for 3 units of credit (equivalent to 150 externship hours). Each externship meets the Experiential Learning requirement. In order to receive ExPro credit students must also register for, and successfully complete, LAW 706. You must register for ExPro if you are seeking experiential course credit.
