In alignment with our Santa Clara University values of competence, conscience, and compassion, we are proud to announce the return of our 1L Coaching Teams, which seek to nurture students’ compassion and sense of belonging in the Santa Clara Law community.
An excellent mentor candidate is someone who can devote their time, energy, and focus to one or two student participants during four scheduled meetings, through the duration of their 1L year. Excellent mentor candidates will also demonstrate an ability to listen and support students without necessarily offering immediate solutions, but rather affirming experiences and providing resources.
As a mentor, you will have control over meeting format and timing. Furthermore, if two students, you can decide whether you’d like to meet individually or together.
In addition to meeting with an attorney mentor, students engaged in the Coaching Team will have an introductory meeting with their assigned career coach from the Office of Career Management (OCM).
What we expect of you as a mentor:
- Availability for two fall semester meetings, to be completed during the months of September – November.
- At least one encouragement email sent during their first reading period for final exams (to be sent any time during the window of November 30 – December 3, 2024).
- Availability for two spring semester meetings, to be completed during the months of January – April.
- Completion of an experience survey at the conclusion of each semester.
- Open communication with the OCM.
- Encouraging and compassionate treatment of students.

- Reminder emails for deadlines to complete required meetings and outreach tasks.
- Discussion prompts to guide your initial conversations.
- Diligent consideration of feedback gathered through the experience survey process.
- Sincere gratitude for your support of the Santa Clara Law community.
Desired outcomes for students from the inaugural coaching teams:
- Increased willingness to initiate conversations with Santa Clara Law alumni.
- Increased sense of belonging in the legal community.
