false_confession_110813NCIP’s Maitreya Badami was featured as an expert in a CBS San Francisco story exploring the prevalence of juveniles who falsely confess to crimes during interrogations. The story examines how police can pressure juvenile suspects until they break down and admit to crimes they have not committed. The story highlights NCIP client Jarvell Smart, who falsely confessed to being an accomplice in a shooting when he was 15. The video of his interrogation shows how detectives broke down Smart until he confessed after hours of interrogation. Smart, now 24, has spent almost 10 years in prison. The main witness, who was also 15 at the time, has recanted his story that Smart was at the crime scene.  Smart’s case is on appeal before the federal district court in Sacramento.
