Registration of New Law Student Organizations
Law students are free to organize and join organizations whose stated purposes are consistent with the University and School of Law mission. All student organizations seeking recognition by the Student Bar Association and eligibility for University benefits must be registered and must follow the procedures described below. Registration carries with it certain rights and responsibilities. Registered groups can be held accountable to the norms and standards of conduct and civility that exemplify our campus community.
New Organization Checklist
If you want to become a registered group and eligible to receive SBA funding you must complete all items on this list.
Law student organizations must have:
1. A Constitution which includes:
- • The stated purpose of the organization.
- • The rules and regulations governing all organizational procedures and duties of the organization’s officers.
- • The organization’s commitment of service to the Santa Clara University School of Law community. This form should be turned into Law Student Services (Bannan 210, or aguglielmo@scu.edu).
2. Complete a Law Student Organization Registration Form. This form should be submitted to Alisa Guglielmo in Law Student Services.
3. At least five (5) active law student members from the University community without discriminating against race, religion, sex, color, handicap, nationality, ethnic origin, sexual preference, or political affiliation.
4. All officers and members be current or former law students at Santa Clara University.
5. Present a list of all active members and the above registration form to Alisa Guglielmo and to the Vice President (full-time) before receiving recognition.
6. Establish that the organization does not duplicate an existing organization.
7. Have a purpose not inconsistent with the mission and educational goals of Santa Clara University School of Law.
8. Follow SBA guidelines for budget proposals (SOBA form).
9. Maintain a web page for their organization.
10. Learn how to use the Astra Calendar, the University’s room reservation system.
- • You can use Astra to book rooms in Bannan, Benson and across campus.
- • Access to Astra is given out in late summer.
- • Laura McGeehon, lmcgeehon@scu.edu, manages Astra for the law school.
- • Click here for a tutorial on how to use the Astra calendar.
- Note: Astra does not link up to the Law School Web Calendar. You must post your event on the web calendar separately.
11. Learn how to post events on the Law School Web Calendar. Directions for how to post events on the Web Calendar can be found on ClaraNet under: Main Index> Reserves by Department> Student Services> Law Student Organizations.
12. Read through and sign the Law Classroom, Lounge and Announcement Policies Form and turn into Law Student Services in Bannan 210.
13. Read through and be aware of the Strong Commons Room Policy and the policy on Student Organization Mail.
Failure to complete any of the above items may result in a withholding of funding. For more detailed information on the SBA Group Recognition Policy see SBA Constitution By Law No. 1).
