On February 12, 2014, Chairman John D. (Jay) Rockefeller introduced The Forensic Science and Standards Act of 2014 to improve forensic science reform efforts by prioritizing scientific research and supporting long-term cooperation between scientists and various members of the criminal justice system. The Forensic Science and Standards Act of 2014 stems from Rockefeller’s work in response to a 2009 National Academies report, “Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward.” The report discovered that due to the lack of supporting science and standards, analysis of forensic evidence can be dangerously compromised.
If passed, the Forensic Science and Standards Act of 2014 would require the development of forensic science standards, the implementation of uniform standards, and the promotion of scientific research. Rockefeller stated, “This important work will help convict the guilty and protect the innocent.”
