South Africans who have been wrongfully convicted of crimes now have a resource to turn to for assistance in having their convictions overturned. The Innocence Project South Africa, a pro bono legal clinic, recently registered with the Innocence Network and, like innocence projects across the United States, will work to exonerate those who have been wrongfully convicted of crimes, particularly through the help of DNA technology. Innocence Project South Africa was co-founded by Professor Sean Davison, head of the forensic DNA laboratory at University of Western Cape and Dr. Andra le Roux, a lawyer based at Stellenbosch University. “It’s a shocking crime against humanity to keep someone in jail who shouldn’t be,” said Davison.
