Santa Clara Law Adjunct Professor Honorable Kurt Kumli has died at the age of 52.

Judge Kumli was a California Superior Court Judge for the County of Santa Clara. Prior to his appointment, Judge Kumli was the Chief Deputy District Attorney in the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office where he was the primary policy advisor and administrator for all matters relating to juvenile justice. A nationally recognized expert in juvenile law and policy, Judge Kumli served on the faculty for the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Center for Judicial Education and Research (CJER), the California Judges Association and a variety of state and national attorney organizations. He was also appointed by California Supreme Court Chief Justice Ron George to Advisory Committees for the California Judicial Council on three separate occasions, twice as an attorney and once as a bench officer. Judge Kumli co-authored “California Juvenile Courts: Practice and Procedure” (Matthew Bender, Lexis Publishing). His other publications include articles on gang prosecution, juvenile justice reform, juvenile mental health court, and California’s adult court certification (Fitness) process.
