On November 9 – 11, Edward Kwakwa, Legal Counsel to the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, visited the School of Law.  While here, he gave a guest lecture on "The Role of the Legal Advisor in International Organizations", in Professor Toman’s International Law Seminar, he gave a noon lecture for students on "Intellectual Property Law Across Borders", and met for a special brunch with students interested in international law and international intellectual property law.

Dr. Kwakwa, a national of Ghana, holds an LL.B. degree from the University of Ghana, an LL.M. from Queen’s University in Canada, and an LL.M. and J.S.D. from Yale University.  Before joining WIPO, Dr. Kwakwa worked as International Legal Advisor at the Commission on Global Governance in Geneva, as Senior Legal Advisor at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva, and as Legal Affairs Officer at the World Trade Organization in Geneva.

Dr. Kwakwa is the author of two books and numerous articles on international law.  He currently is serving as a Member of the Governing Council of Africa Legal Aid, Member of the International Law Association’s Committee on the Accountability of International Organizations and its Study Group on the Responsibility of International Organizations, and Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board of the African Journal of International and Comparative Law.  He also serves on the Editorial Boards of several international law journals and has been an Adjunct/Visiting Professor of Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the University of Denver College of Law, the International Law Institute in Kampala, Uganda, the University of Pretoria and the University of Western Cape in South Africa.
