The Regional Giles Rich Moot Court Competition took place at USF on March 10, 11 and 12. The competition involved appellate arguments focusing on patent law issues.  SCU School of Law was coached by Bingham McCutchen attorney, Saina Shamilov and represented at the Regional Competition by two teams:

(1) Michael Dix (3L) and Sandip Patel (2L) and

(2) Louis Diep (3L) and Kwan Chan (2L).

SCU competed against 18 teams from 13 different schools. Louis Diep and Kwan Chan advanced into the Regional Finals and will represent the law school at the National Competition in Washington D.C. in April.  Louis and Kwan beat teams from Boalt, BYU, Lewis & Clark, Stanford, George Washington, and USF among others.

The Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition is the preeminent patent moot court competition in the nation established in honor of the late Giles Sutherland Rich, circuit judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The contest is sponsored by the American Intellectual Property Law Association. The competition has two elements: written briefs and oral argument. The written portion involves the simultaneous preparation of two appellate briefs - one for the appellant and the other for the appellee.  The oral portion involves arguing an appeal with a partner to a panel of three judges. Students interested in next year's competition should look for an announcement in the coming months.
