On Friday, February 26, Santa Clara University School of Law High Tech Law Institute (HTLI) hosed a full-day event titled “Patent Litigation 2016: The Courts and Patent Trial and Appeal Board.” The event was co-sponsored by the Federal Circuit Bar Association and the Bay Area IP Inn of Court. Approximately 135 individuals attended, including several students.

Highlights of the event included the final panel of the day, which included Circuit Judge Raymond Chen from the Federal Circuit, Chief Administrative Patent Judge Nathan Kelley from the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal from the Northern District of California. (Judge Grewal is also an active member of our High Tech Advisory Board.)

Other notable speakers included Santa Clara Law’s own Colleen Chien (who also delivered welcome remarks on SCU’s behalf to kick off the event), Judge William Alsup (ND Cal), Noreen Krall (Apple’s Chief Litigation Counsel), Catherine Lacavera (Google’s Director of IP and Litigation), and Santa Clara Law alumna Gabriella Ziccarelli (JD ’13). Other speakers included in house counsel from Microsoft, DuPont, and Intellectual Ventures, and partners from firms including Finnegan, Latham, Fenwick, and Fish & Richardson. It is also worth noting that 11 of the 21 speakers at the event were women.
