Congratulations to Professor David Sloss, who President Engh recently appointed as the John A. and Elizabeth H. Sutro Professor of Law.  Please join us for Convocation on August 10 at 6 p.m. in Mayer Theater to hear David address our incoming students. The Honorable Shelyna Brown will lead students in the Oath of Professionalism and Fr. Luis Arriaga, S.J., will offer an invocation.

The Sutro chair was formerly held by Professor Emerita Stephanie Wildman, who continues to distinguish our community with her prolific scholarship and who served as a devoted teacher, scholar and public interest champion during her tenure as the Sutro Professor. Professor Sloss will continue that tradition with his long, prolific and stellar record. His work in global human rights align well with the intentions of the donors, who want to foster the mission of Santa Clara University as they recognize an outstanding teacher and scholar. Aligned with the spirit of the Sutro Professorship, Professor Sloss combines his research and teaching to benefit the public interest. His latest book on global treaties earned a prestigious award from the American Society for International Law. He teaches major bar courses in addition to upper-division international law electives. He was voted the most outstanding teacher by our first-year students in 2016-17 and he has agreed to serve with Professor Ellen Kreitzberg as co-director of our Center for Social Justice and Public Service in 2017-18. He is devoted to helping students pursue public interest jobs, from the Bay Area to Geneva, and he uses his many contacts to establish externship and other learning opportunities for our students. David has served the School with great energy and enthusiasm, chairing the Curriculum Committee this past year when the faculty approved three innovative offerings, and serving on many other important committees.
