How Do I Request an Item? Requests for interlibrary loans should be submitted through our web form.
What is the Turnaround Time? Materials are usually received within 5-14 working days but this depends on how quickly other libraries respond to our requests. Patrons should be aware that we try our best to obtain requested items as quickly as possible, but it is always best to anticipate your needs when placing requests.
What is the Loan Period? The lending library determines the loan period, which can be a week to a month. The borrower is responsible to the lending library for overdue fines and must abide by the rules and policies of the lending library. Due dates are written on a book band that will be wrapped around the cover of the requested material.
Can I renew an ILL book? Most books may be renewed unless the book band indicates “NO Renewals”.
You may also renew online using the following instructions:
- Log in to your ILLiad account
- In the “Main Menu” (left side of the ILLiad screen) under the “View” section click on “Checked Out Items”.
- Click the Transaction Number for the item you want to renew.
- Click “Renew Request” in red above the Transaction Information, and the ILL staff will submit your renewal request.
- Renewals usually take less than 24 hours.
- Login to your ILLiad account; and write the new due date on your book band.
How will I know my materials have arrived? Heafey faculty, staff, and, law students will be notified by e-mail when their requested material arrives. Interlibrary Loan materials are always picked up and returned to the Heafey Circulation Desk.
Interlibrary Loan Lending to Other Libraries Interlibrary Loan lends material to other libraries to help meet the research needs of their patrons. The Heafey Law Library will lend via ILL circulating materials to other libraries for a period of four weeks. One three-week renewal will be allowed if the material has not been requested by another patron.
Lending Fees There is a $15.00 fee assessed for each item that is borrowed. For journal articles, or other photocopying, the fee is $15.00 for the first 25 pages and then $.25 for each page after that. We honor, and encourage, reciprocal lending agreements. Please contact us directly to arrange for reciprocity agreements.

The copyright law of the United States(Title 17,U.S.C.) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any other purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purpose in excess of “fair use”, that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution will not accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.
