Guide to Animal Law

Issues related to animal law have become important elements in American jurisprudence. This field not only regulates the treatment of domesticated or companion animals, but also farm animals, wildlife, medical experimentation, hunting/wildlife management, animal sacrifice, and aquatic life.

 

This research guide is designed for students doing coursework in this area of law. It is not designed for issues relating to international and foreign animal law. For these sources, please refer to the other research guides listed below.

Journals

The journal, Animal Law, published at Lewis and Clark in Portland, OR is the country's first law journal focused on animal law issues. The library owns all print volumes of this journal from 1995 onward, and it is also available via HeinOnline.

Animal Law.com -- AnimalLaw.com provides access to legislation and legal matters pertaining to the rights and welfare of animals. AnimalLaw.com supports information concerning animal cruelty, animal control, laboratory animal welfare, the use of animals in education, product testing and in the laboratory, animal control issues, and general animal welfare.

 

World Animal.net -- Contains current status of pending, or existing, legislation regarding animal rights.

 

Humane Society of the United States -- Includes descriptions of public-awareness campaigns, programs, legislation, activist alerts, and educational publications.

 

Animal Legal Defense Fund -- Since 1979, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has led the fight to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system.

 

Center for Wildlife Law -- The Center for Wildlife Law is the only national center dedicated to education, research and analysis of state, national and international wildlife laws. Established at the Institute of Public Law, University of New Mexico School of Law in 1990, the Center's mission is to raise the level of understanding and discussion about wildlife issues through interdisciplinary education, training, analysis and publication on wildlife law and policy issues.

 

National Center for Animal Law (Lewis and Clark College of Law) -- The National Center for Animal Law trains and supports animal law students in order to further the field of animal law and promote legal protections for animals.

 

International Institute for Animal Law -- A not-for-profit organization composed of a renowned and experienced group of attorneys and judges from around the world, the Institute is dedicated to creating and supporting programs that will enhance the development of laws that protect animals. Has an excellent bibliography on animal law divided into the following sections:


People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- A rather controversial, but well-known, activist group committed to the cause of animal rights and welfare.
