Santa Clara University’s existing position on copyright & file sharing.

Did you know, sharing music and any other type of copyrighted materials is illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). This is a Federal Law and applies to everyone at Santa Clara University. Violation is subject to Federal prosecution, fines and jail time.

At SCU, students caught in violation of this law will be immediately identified and reported to the Dean of Student Life. Network access will be removed for the computer used for file sharing. The student will be referred to the Dean for disciplinary action. The banned computer will be inspected by the Central IT (not the Law School IT) and all copyrighted materials will be removed. All files sharing will be disabled. Repeat offenders may be subject to further disciplinary action and possible reconnection fees for the network access.
