2009 Summer Abroad Programs by Subject Area

What in the World Do You Want to Study?
 
Santa Clara Law has a wide range of courses, or subjects, which are truly international in content.
 

 

 
Antiquities Law
Istanbul, Turkey
The first half of this six week course surveys middle eastern law and legal systems. The second half explores national and international regulation of antiquities, art, and cultural properties. Students have insider visits to museums and archeological sites.
 
Business - International Business Transactions
Shanghai and Hong Kong
"Doing Business in China." Students can select either Hong Kong or Shanghai. The Hong Kong program will focus more on the unique political and economic status of Hong Kong, while Shanghai will focus more on the Peoples Republic of China. Internships in both cities.
 
Tokyo, Japan
International business transactions with a Japanese emphasis. Internships available
 
Singapore
This course surveys the legal systems of the countries of Southeastern Asia, with emphasis on business and human rights issues. This course may be taken alone, combined with another summer program, or serve as a basis for any one of a number of internships in the region (Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam or Thailand).
 
Vienna and Budapest
This three country program combines a study of comparative and civil law with an in-depth look, from differing perspectives, of the European Union. This study includes business, intellectual property, environmental law, monetary regulation, and more. Short internships available.
 
Comparative Law
While most Santa Clara program contain a segment on the law of the host nation, some programs have a more intensive comparative law aspect. In particular:
 
Istanbul, Turkey
The first three weeks of this six week program focus on the law of Turkey and other middle eastern systems. Students may continue with a three week course on Law and Antiquities.
 
Vienna and Budapest
While one focus of this program is upon the European Union, the full program explores civil law systems in the Eastern European context. Short internships in the region are available.
 
Singapore
This course surveys the legal systems of the countries of Southeastern Asia, with segments on business and human rights issues. This course may be taken alone, combined with another summer program, or serve as a basis for any one of a number of internships in the region (Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam or Thailand).
Human Rights
The Hague, The Netherlands
International criminal justice. Students attend actual proceedings of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. Seminar meetings with prosecutors, defense counsel and judges. Students might consider combining the program at the Hague with the Geneva/Strasbourg program below.
 
Geneva/Strasbourg
The three week Geneva segment introduces students to public international law, international human rights, and major international organizations. The four weeks in Strasbourg is attending the Rene Cassin Institute for International Human Rights where specific areas of human rights are examined and discussed.
 
Costa Rica
A study of Inter-American Human rights at the Inter-American court. After this three week course, students may take a second class in Refugee Law, or undertake an internship. Language instruction included and immersion, home living option available.
 
Singapore
Our Singapore course incorporates an entire segment on Human Rights in Southeast & South Asia. A student may opt for an exciting internship in Human Rights in Cambodia.
Intellectual Property and High Technology Law
Munich, Germany
Comparative intellectual property that utilizes European and German systems as the major point of comparison. No expertise or prior course work needed. Internships available.
 
Sydney, Australia
After a one week introduction to the legal system of Australia three weeks of classes are dedicted to law and technology issues including intellectual property, enviornmental law, bio-technology. Internship option.
 
Internships – Extended
 
Most Santa Clara Law summer programs provide a two to four week internship option as that follows a classroom component. For those seeking more practical experience and less classroom work over the summer, Santa Clara can provide a limited number of eight week internships in:
Australia
Singapore
Thailand
Cambodia
Vietnam
Each is preceded by an introductory course (Sydney for Australian internships or Singapore for internships in Southeastern Asia). These placements impose obligations beyond those found in three unit internships, which include, but are not limited to, a contemporaneous seminar, tutorial, or other means of guided reflection. See ABA Standard 305(e). These internships are coordinated through the law schools Externship Coordinator.
 
Refugee Law and Policy
Costa Rica
Two week, mid summer course that may be taken alone, or following the human rights course in San Jose, Costa Rica. Focus is upon Latin American refugee issues.
 
Something for Everyone: Study like an English Law Student or Rhodes Scholar!
Oxford, England
The program in Oxford allows students to select from about 20 topics that range from Roman Law to Cyberspace law. Students live at historic Magdalen College. Along with a weekly seminar on English legal traditions, and a visit to the Royal Courts and Grays Inn in London students have weekly one-on-one tutorials with Oxford dons. Students have option to take a two unit lecture course offered by Florida State University.
