General Instructions for Applying to Summer Abroad Programs
Please read all the information on this page BEFORE applying for our summer abroad programs
Thank you for your interest in Santa Clara summer law study abroad programs. Whichever program(s) you select, you will have a marvelous experience! Enrollment is easy. Here is what you do:
- Consult Policies, Standards, and Expectations, Santa Clara University School of Law Summer Abroad Programs on our web site.
- Talk with officials of your home school regarding the transfer of grades and credit.
- Complete the entire application and mail in the deposit to secure a place in our programs.
If you are applying for an internship you will need to attach a number of supporting documents to this application. If you are applying for an internship in Tokyo or Costa Rica, before your application can be processed, we must receive the following materials together with your application:
- Five (5) hard copies of complete and current resume AND an electronic copy emailed to pkao1@scu.edu.
- Five (5) passport sized photographs in business attire.
- A personal statement that includes the student’s academic and professional background, as well as academic and professional goals, and language proficiency.
- A separate, brief statement of preference as to the nature of the internship (e.g., law office, government agency, corporate law) and the subject matter area of law preferred (e.g., business, human rights, intellectual property, etc.)
- A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the applicant’s abilities that attests to the applicant’s ability to undertake the professional responsibilities of an internship.
Deposits: Course applications require a deposit of $300 for each program. If you are seeking an internship, an internship processing fee of $700 also is required. Both deposits are non-refundable, but will be applied to your tuition. If paying by check, please make all checks payable to: Santa Clara University.
Social Security Number: SSN is required for all applicants if you have one. Please send your SSN to our center using one of the following three options: (1) attach it with the check when you mail in the deposit (2) fax in to 408-554-5047 with the following information: yoru name, application confirmation number and SSN (if leaving a voice mail message, please speak clearly and slowly, and repeat this information twice).

PLEASE NOTE. You will not receive notification of payments due. You will not receive an invoice from Santa Clara University. It is your responsibility to track deadlines and payments. Please log in to Santa Clara's e-campus system to check account balances, amounts due and to make payment by April 17, 2009. Students who submit their application after March 20, 2009 should include payment of full tuition with their application.
- Deadline: This application, together with the appropriate deposit, needs to be received by this office no later than March 20, 2009. If you are seeking an internship, applications should be received by this office no later than February 13, 2009. Enrollment in classes is not competitive, but based on first come, first served until the enrollment cap is reached.

Internship in Tokyo and Shanghai have now been filled. Internship opportunities are still available in other programs. Please contact the center for more details.
- Enrollment documentation: Soon after we receive your application and deposit, you will be informed of your enrollment status and the amount of tuition and fees needed to complete your enrollment. Confirming internship placements typically takes longer. You also will be asked for documentation needed to confirm your enrollment. Enrollment documentation and fees must be received by this office by April 17, 2009.
Enrollment documentation due by April 17, 2009 includes the following:
- Complete, current resume
- Statement of good standing from your home law school (not required for SCU students)
- Transcript from your law school (not required for SCU students), or if a law school graduate, evidence of graduation
- Photographic copy of your passport. (The passport must not expire within six months of the scheduled end of the program)
- One additional passport photograph (preferably in business attire)
- Executed Informed Consent Form
- Proof of health insurance covering illness or injury abroad for total period of the program(s)
Getting ready to go! Upon receipt of the enrollment documentation and payment of tuition and fees, you will be contacted by the faculty director of the program in which you are enrolled and provided a handbook of information about the program. If you have not done so already, you then need to make your travel arrangements.
E-mail communication: Once students are admitted, each student will be given an Ecampus account and Santa Clara University e-mail account. All e-mail communication from our end will be sent to students' SCU e-mail account ONLY.
