Waitlists
August 04, 2010 at 5:20 PM
I thought I would share my experience with waitlists at SCU for this Fall semester for future students so they won't fret all summer over classes (like I initially did). At the beginning of summer, I was waitlisted for seven classes with positions ranging from 4 to 24. I received an email offering me a seat in six of those classes already. (I turned down a number of them based on other classes I got into). I was initially number 7 and am now at position 2 for the remaining class. Also, in the past, the professor for this class has let everyone on the waitlist into his class who shows up on the first day. I should also add that an additional section was opened up for two of the classes I was waitlisted for (Antitrust and Intellectual Property Survey), and I know other students who moved off the waitlist from positions in the 30s. So there you have it-- waitlists are not bad at all at SCU.

Why Do You Want to be a Lawyer?
January 12, 2010 at 1:44 PM
For most of us, one of two things are occurring as the grades roll in: your lofty visions of evaluating numerous big firm, six-figure offers next Fall during OCI are crashing ever so violently against the trampled first-floor carpet of Bannan Hall; or, the prior assumption that you'll most likely need to settle for whatever public interest firm is willing to toss you a bone upon graduation is suddenly a severe underestimation of your qualifications.

As the state continues to slash $1.2 billion from the prison budget, hundreds of men are moving into triple bunks in what used to be gyms and cafeterias. The first line items that usually get cut? Services. Health care, treatment for mental illness, education, job training - all the things that prevent released prisoners from doing something that puts them right back in jail - get cut faster than anything else.

Diagnosis: The 1L Madness
September 01, 2009 at 12:16 PM
I realize that many of my classmates have endured the great pressures of graduate school, jobs, public positions, and beyond. But law school seems to be its own beast that can only be tamed through experience. What does that mean? Well, it means we'll learn as we go, and the learnin' is tough.

Introducing myself... and others
August 20, 2009 at 9:16 PM
Ahhh.. the first week of school. I think I'm still suffering from culture shock. I moved from a tiny town in Eastern Washington called Wenatchee (which claims to be the "Apple Capital of the World"). In addition to that, I haven't been working for quite some time (lay-offs at my old job). Thankfully, unemployment benefits gave me a few months of paid vacation before I started school. The rough life I lead, right?

The Study Group Dilemma
August 19, 2009 at 1:32 PM
I would say that if there is one thing most people seem to be pretty confused about in this, our first week of law school, it's whether or not to embark on that age-old tradition of forming study groups.
There's a great scene in the beginning of "The Paper Chase" when James Hart and the rest of the 1Ls are deciding how to utilize the group. The first thing they do is "assign outlines." This produces a fight as to who gets to take care of which subject.
