Santa Clara Law is delighted to once again provide an opportunity for alumni to apply for admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. Alumni who have been practicing members of the highest court of a U.S. state for a minimum period of three years and are in good standing are eligible to apply. This gathering is limited to the first 35 alumni who submit all necessary materials by February 10, 2016 as detailed below. Each applicant being admitted may bring one guest into the Court to witness the ceremony.

4/3/2016

6 p.m. – Sunday evening Welcome Reception – The George Hotel

4/4/2016

8:30 a.m. – Monday morning arrival at U.S. Supreme Court for security clearance (Maryland Avenue entrance.)  Continental breakfast provided.

10:00 a.m. – Swearing-In Ceremony with honorary movant, U.S. Assistant Attorney General John Cruden J.D. ’74

10:30 a.m.  – Reception with Supreme Court Justice and group photographs

Noon – Luncheon at The Monocle Restaurant  with special guest speaker, Colette Rausch J.D. ’90, author of Speaking Their Peace: Personal Stories from the Frontlines of War and Peace.


HOW TO APPLY:

  1. To begin your reservation, please complete the Form of Intent and submit your payment for $100. By submitting this completed form, you are reserving a space in the swearing-in ceremony, reception, and luncheon that will follow.* Up to three guests can be registered at this time at $100 per person. Only one guest will be allowed to witness the courtroom ceremony but up to three can enter the Supreme Court for the reception and attend the luncheon which follows.
  2. Review the full Instructions for Admission to the Bar and complete the U.S. Supreme Court Bar Application. Each applicant must include the endorsement of two sponsors, each of whom must be a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court. (These sponsors can not be related to you by blood or marriage. Contact the Law Alumni Office for assistance if needed.)
  3. Obtain a certificate from the clerk, presiding judge or, or other authorized official of the highest Court of a State, Commonwealth, Territory or Possession, or the District of Columbia evidencing you have been a member in good standing of the Bar of such for at least three years.  Bar certificates are not accepted. For California residents, please reference the following information from the CA State Bar website:

    Some jurisdictions (such as the U.S. Supreme Court) require a certificate from the California Supreme Court. The requesting entity will usually use the term, “a certificate from the highest court you are a member of,” or indicate “not from The State Bar.” These are obtained directly from the Court with a written request and a fee of $1 (dollar bill or check payable to Clerk of the Supreme Court of California). Send your request, payment and self-addressed stamped envelope to:

  4. Submit one check for payment as follows:
    • $200 check made payable to the “Supreme Court of the United States”
  5. Return Bar Application, Application Materials, and one checks by February 10, 2016 to:

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS:

A block of rooms has been reserved at The George Hotel, a Kimpton Hotel, conveniently located near Capitol Hill.  The rates are $339 (single/double), $359 (triple) $379 (Quad.)  This block is available for both Sunday and Monday nights.  Spring is a busy time for visitors to this city but the hotel location provides many opportunities to discover on your own.  The room reservations block is on a first-come, first-served basis, and reservations must be made by March 4, 2016.  Contact the Reservations Office at (800) 546-7866.  Note:  Each participant is responsible for making and paying for his/her own travel arrangements and hotel accommodations.
