"HOMELESS AND PENNILESS IN A FOREIGN LAND: Navigating the Legal Complexities of NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Abandonment"
Dr. Sharmila Lodhia, Inclusive Excellence Post-Doctoral Fellow, Departments of Political Science and Women's and Gender Studies at Santa Clara University
May 18, 2009 in the Weigand Room (A&S) from 3:30-5:00 pm
Refreshment will be served.
Dr. Lodhia will present her analysis of the phenomenon of transnational abandonment or what has emerged in media discourses as the figure of the "NRI abandoned bride.” This analysis includes an examination of recent legal and governmental interventions in the arena of NRI abandonment in order to determine whether these efforts meaningfully respond to the complexity of serving women across geographic and jurisdictional boundaries given the absence of a coordinated system of inter-governmental communication or established cross-border advocacy networks.
