Seats available for Advanced Immigration Law - Refugee and Asylum Law
This course will look at the development of United States refugee and asylum law. United States refugee and asylum law is uniquely tied to the development of international refugee law. The course will address the historical and the current issues in refugee law. It will follow evolving case law in the U.S., and touch on similar case law in other countries such as Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. This evolving case law has begun to address gender-related persecution. But the law has yet to address the needs of internally displaced persons, as well as persons fleeing man-made disasters. This course will challenge students to analyze refugee and asylum law and to explore the challenges facing the U.S. and other countries offering safe haven. In addition, this course will address two related legal issues and laws. The first is trafficking in persons. The second is detention of unaccompanied minors.
