Information from Campus Safety Services regarding Parking
September 12, 2007 at 2:36 PM
All,

The beginning of each academic year always brings with it certain challenges as far as parking is concened. This year, with a large amount of construction taking place on campus, it becomes a little more difficult to find that parking place which is as close as one would like it to be to access either office or classroom; and because of the fact that the Law School classes resume before the undergraduates return, there is a certain sense of "exclusivity" of parking for law students......until events like Freshman/Transfer Student Orientation occur.

The University's sale of a permit provides permission to park on campus; it does not guarantee the availability of a parking space, especially one that may be immediately adjacent to our campus destinations. Accordingly, the following information is offered to ease the transition into the Fall Undergraduate Quarter:

1. The surface parking lot adjacent to the main entrance (now called 3rd Mission Site) has been expanded to 190 spaces, the majority of which are for E permit holders; or E permit holders on a first-come, first serve basis. The lot is scheduled to be open on Monday September 17th;

2. We are adding the capability to monitor the number of available spaces on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the Parking Structure at the Front Gate kiosk. By merely stopping by and checking with the officer on duty, you can learn if there are a large number of spaces, or just a few left. This will potentially prevent a needless trip to the top of the Structure and back, delaying students in reaching their classes. This capability should be operational by the end of the first week of classes;

3. Consider choosing a parking venue other than the Structure or the 3rd Mission Site as your "primary target" for parking. Spaces sit empty in the Franklin Lot (where there are a number of E and B+E spaces) for most of the day. The Franklin Lot is across the street from The Hut at Franklin and The Alameda. The F lot at The Alameda (albeit only 14 spaces) is available; as is the University Finance Office at Benton and Lafayette. And of course, there's always the Leavey Lot which will free up considerably in the Winter Quarter

(Most law students have the capability of transporting their books with roller carts; so what you're being asked to consider is trading time spent in search of a potential parking place with time spent traveling from your parked car to the classroom)
Perhaps the most challenging week is yet to come. Undergraduate classes start on the 17th; and this will likely be the toughest week of the Quarter. Please plan your time accordingly.

Thank You
