BILINGUAL (SPANISH) HOUSING ATTORNEY


The Santa Clara County Office of Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal) is currently accepting applications for a Spanish-speaking attorney who will focus on housing litigation, including eviction defense, fair housing and enforcing the rights of tenants in foreclosed properties.


The Organization: Bay Legal is the largest legal services provider in the Bay Area, serving Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties. BayLegal operates six regional offices and has approximately 100 staff members. BayLegal assists clients primarily in housing, family law/domestic violence, access to healthcare and public benefits matters.


Job Description:

 

The position involves the following duties: representation of low-income tenants in eviction trials held in Superior Court; identification and pursuit of affirmative fair housing litigation; conducting community outreach and training; working in collaboration with other practice areas to provide holistic legal services to clients; and addressing systemic issues in areas that uniquely effect our clients’ housing rights through use of impact litigation and policy work. This position will be housed in our downtown San Jose office.


Requirements:

     • Membership in good standing of any state bar including the California State Bar;
     • Bilingual ability in Spanish;
     • Two years relevant litigation experience;
     • Excellent communication and writing skills;
     • Strong organizational skills;
     • Ability to work independently and as a team player;
     • Ability to work with low-income clients and clients with disabilities; and
     • A driver’s license and access to a car.

 

Compensation is based upon experience. Generous benefits package includes Medical, Dental and life insurance, loan repayment and bilingual differential.
