Position Description

Affymetrix is recruiting for a high-caliber, motivated attorney to lead our intellectual property team. We are seeking someone with strong legal and technical background (preferably biotechnology) with patent licensing, preparation and prosecution experience. Registration to practice before the USPTO and state bar registration are required and an advanced degree is preferred.

The successful candidate will lead a team responsible for identifying, developing, preparing and prosecuting of patent applications related to chemical, biochemical and molecular biology inventions as well as conducting and /or overseeing freedom- to- operate patent reviews, investigating infringement of Affymetrix patent rights by third parties; drafting, negotiating and /or reviewing contracts and other agreements containing IP provisions and participating in due diligence and other M&A activities throughout the company's worldwide operations, as well as providing ongoing prosecution oversight for the existing portfolio, including providing technology development counseling to Affymetrix inventors and business professionals.

Additionally, the position requires strong patent analysis skills and extensive experience in licensing, product clearances, validity studies and pre-dispute risk assessment. Candidates should have excellent leadership and communication skills, commitment to best-in-class patent quality and be comfortable in a fast-paced, distributed work environment.

Position Requirements

•excellent academic credentials and license to practice before the USPTO;

•advanced degree in biology, molecular biology or other relevant field strongly preferred;

•strong leadership and communication skills and experience working with scientists, engineers and/or product managers;

•minimum 10 years of progressively responsible legal experience, including work in a leadership capacity in biotechnology or health care industry;
•experience identifying patentable subject matter and prosecuting applications;

•seasoned expertise and in-depth knowledge of licensing practices and strategies, contract, trademark and related IP issues;
•experience managing IP litigation preferred
